Midwifery encompasses primary health care principles as well as emotional and social aspects of birth. Maternity Services within the MLHD provide a professional service that educates, empowers, and provides women-centred care.  Women and their families are supported through pregnancy, labour, birth, and postnatally. Our Maternity services are guided by Ministry of Health policies, MLHD policies, procedures and local guidelines which are evidence-based and support best practice. Innovative Midwifery Models of Care are offered within MLHD Maternity Services.  We are responsive to contemporary trends and challenges in healthcare.

There are two Maternity Services within MLHD that will employ postgraduate student midwives for training in 2016 (refer table below). These Maternity services have been teaching facilities for Undergraduate and Postgraduate midwifery students for a number of years and are committed to ensuring that all students receive the best opportunities during their learning experience.

MLHD has excellent retention rates on completion of the program. The skilled and supportive staff will provide a dynamic learning environment enabling student midwives to become safe and competent practitioners.

All sites are supported by Midwifery Educators either based on site or within MLHD.
