Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital was named as part of the redevelopment project in 2015.

The name was chosen to reflect the role the new hospital plays as a specialist rural referral hospital within the district. Patients are referred to the Wagga facility for procedures and specialist care and return to their local community for ongoing care under their usual doctor.
