Picture yourself as a non smoker

A new art competition launched for World No Tobacco Day, Wednesday 31 May, wants to challenge young people about the consequences of smoking.

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) in partnership with Mission Australia and Pathways initiated the project, Choose Your Own Adventure, for young people aged 12-17 living in MLHD.

“As many young people living with a smoker think smoking is normal, the project is designed to trigger thoughts and discussion around the consequences of smoking and the choices people make,” said Health Promotion Officer Adelle Kennedy.

“We are inviting young people to submit three images: one that illustrates who they are today, the second to illustrate how they would see themselves in 20 years if they were a smoker and a third to illustrate who they would be if they were a non-smoker 20 years from now,” Ms Kennedy said.

“There are some great prizes with the three winners in the three categories choosing their own adventure experience in Sydney or Melbourne valued at more than $1000, including travel and accommodation for two people,” she said.

Prize winners will have the choice of six experiences including a jet boat ride on Sydney Harbour, a day of abseiling and canyoning in the Blue Mountains, a private surf lesson on Manly, swimming with the dolphins and seals in Port Phillip Bay, Roar n Snore at Melbourne Zoo or tree surfing on the Mornington Peninsula.

To enter, create three images and label them A, B & C: A. How do you see yourself? Who are you now? B. How do you see yourself in 20 years if you choose to smoke? C. How do you see yourself in 20 years if you choose not to smoke?

Include your full name, date of birth, postcode and phone number.  Email entries to MLHD-CompetitionEntries@health.nsw.gov.au or text to 0457 526 008. The competition remains open until 14 July 20.  For further information contact Health Promotion Officer Adelle Kennedy on 0427 835 749 or 6029 8917.

In MLHD, 17 per cent of the population smoked in 2016, a reduction from 18.5 the year before, but still above the NSW average of 15 per cent.
