GradStart - Nursing and Midwifery Program

About us

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) spans 125,243 square kilometres across southern New South Wales, stretching from the Snowy Mountains in the east to the plains of Hillston in the northwest and all the way along the Victorian border. 

As the largest employer in the region, with over 5,000 healthcare staff working across 33 hospitals and 12 primary health care centres, we are supported by hundreds of volunteers who make an invaluable contribution to enriching the lives of people in our care.

What does the MLHD GradStart program include?

We are proud to offer a comprehensive program for first year Registered Nurses (RNs) in many of our hospitals and direct entry Registered Midwives (RMs) into Griffith and Wagga Wagga Base Hospitals.

The program endeavours to provide an environment that is supportive and varied enabling you to consolidate and expand your clinical skills, while building on professional and organisational knowledge in our interesting clinical environments.

We have a range of settings from which to choose inlcuding Wagga Wagga and Griffith Base Hospitals, District Hospitals, Multipurpose Services, and Health Services. Each facility provides great opportunities to learn and explore different nursing environments.

Our communities in the Riverina and Murray region of NSW are welcoming, interesting and fun. Each town has plenty on offer including diverse recreational pursuits, water sports, cultural experiences and natural wonders. Exciting ski fields and picturesque winery and culinary regions are just on your door step when you work, live and play in our District. 

The MLHD GradStart program offers

  • 12 month program
  • 2 x 6 month rotations (GradStart RN)
  • GradStart RM program includes rotations 
  • Full time and part time options
  • Intakes exist for February and August
  • Orientation and supernumerary at commencement of rotations
  • Five paid face to face study days
  • Monthly virtual in-services by GradStart Clinical Nurse Educator
  • Ongoing clinical nurse educator support at each facility/ward/unit
  • Scholarship positions* at University Of Tasmania to complete Clinical Honours (Transition to Practice)

University of Tasmania Clinical Honours (Transition to Practice)

MLHD is proud to partner with the University Of Tasmania (UTAS) to offer the Clinical Honours (Transition to Practice) for registered nurses.

MLHD can offer scholarship opportunities* to GradStart program participants who enrol into the UTAS Clinical Honours (Transition to Practice) program.

GradStart participants are welcome to enrol into the program once you have completed 6 months of the MLHD GradStart program.

When enrolled into the UTAS Clinical Honours (Transition to Practice) program you will study four online units that focus on advanced practice, leadership and policy as well as an elective post-graduate subject which can provide a pathway into postgraduate specialisation study.

These study areas – along with your transition program – will complement your new career, enhance your knowledge, and ensure you’re prepared for the challenges of being a registered nurse.

Graduates who complete Clinical Honours (Transition to Practice) will be given credit for two postgraduate units of study, which may be credited towards the Graduate Diploma of Nursing (depending on units selected)

*Scholarship opportunities to the value of 100% exist for MLHD GradStart RN program participants, UTAS students are required to pay Student Services and Amenities fee.

Information on the 2022 Gradstart Application process

Applications

MLHD recruits all Graduate Nurses and Direct Entry Registered Midwives through the Centralised NSW Health GradStart campaign.

You will need to apply for the NSW Health 2022 GradStart program through the centralised recruitment campaignavailable on the NSW Health Nursing and Midwifery GradStart website when applications open between Wednesday 23 June – Wednesday 7 July 2021.

Please nominate MLHD as your first preference.

You have three options to choose from when selecting us:

  • Griffith Health Service (Inclusive of Community Services)
  • Wagga Wagga Health Service (inclusive of Community Services and Mental Health)
  • MLHD Rural Facilities (including multiple sites).

How can I nominate my rural site and/or clinical preferences?

MLHD aims to build a GradStart program around your preferences to support your active learning and professional development. In order to identify what clinical settings you would like to explore, you can click here to nominate your rural site and/or clinical preferences .

Please complete the survey to identify the facilities you’re interested in working in, and also clinical speciality areas. This information will help MLHD to co-create a GradStart year with you at the centre of rotation preferences. MLHD will aim to accommodate preferences where possible.

By selecting MLHD Rural Facilities as a preference can help you to secure a GradStart position at one of your identified preferences during round one allocations.

Tips for your application

  • Make sure you have a current NSW working with Children Check for paid work prior to applying

  • Use university support services to practice interview techniques
  • Demonstrate your capabilities and skills to those who you nominate as a reference.
